Off to market

I saw this pair of Bromptons outside the supermarket yesterday. They were owned by a couple who had gone to do their grocery shopping. I loved the complimentary colours, the matte powder blue and gloss of the viridian green.

As I was also shopping I had my Trek bike laden with food. But realising that I haven’t been on my Brompton for over a week I took it into the West End later in the afternoon to return a book to Waterstones in Piccadilly and a bag to the Cath Kidston shop in Spittlefields. Travelling in Central London is getting tricky, but I will write about this another time.

Comments

I take mine into the supermarket. Sometimes I use its own rollers, other times I put it in a trolley.

This afternoon I have to pick up some things from B&Q on the way home so I'll put it on one of their big flat trolleys.

These guys might need two trolleys but it still seems like an odd idea to leave a Brompton outside.

Morrisons have those wee trolley lockers at the cafe which I've thought about using.

Ratehr trusting owners to leave their Bromptons outside. I don't think I would do that, especially in London.

I will be interested to hear how travel is becoming trickier in Central London. Bar the odd maniac, it is a pretty good ride, although I still wouldn't touch Park Lane with a 50ft pole. It's even scary to drive there, let alone cycle.

I leave my Brompton outside all the time. I have a very strong D lock. Hassle to carry though.

Which lock do you have? Any recommendations? Do you have insurance?
The only time I have ever locked up a Brompton was on a train from Poole to Southampton. I couldn't fit it in the space beside me.

The train got into Southampton early and I had to rush to unlock the bike and get off before heading to Waterloo.

Even on the train I used an Abus Granite. The bikes in the photo don't look as if they are using anything like that.

I use an Abus Varedo D lock. It is 300mm in length which allows me to lock the bike to a suitable post. I got this one because I needed to have one that was strong enough to meet any insurance requirements but still light enough for me to carry. Yes I have insurance. I put the Brompton on my household insurance policy for a small fee because it is over £500. I also have free third party insurance through my membership of the London Cycling Campaign.
