Rain

Over the past two weeks it has rained just about every day so I have either been a little wet or very wet while out cycling. The new boots from Office are holding up very well.

Its a real challenge to find a shoe that you can commute in in the rain, which won't let water in, and will be suitable for work ie not a Wellington Boot. Any suggestions more than welcome. Real leather tends to get saturated pretty quick in my experience.

I'm afraid I don't do rain very often, even on a Brompton. I can't see very well through my glasses covered in raindrops - especially at night when lights shatter into a million kaleidoscope pieces. Happy then, to walk or ride the bus. I feel safer but it's not the same.

There are times when I am put off getting on the bike because of the rain, but I do cycle in the rain more often. I worry about the tyres slipping on the road which has happened.

As for weather proof shoes. I have found that the waterproofing spray you can get in most shoe shops and shoe repair shops has kept my feet dry. But this only works if the shoes have non-porous soles. If you have these get them re-soled as the water will get in from underneath. I had to do this with my Office Brogues.

Leslie- I had the kaleidescope problem too. What helped was wearing a waterproof cap under the helmet. This stops your head getting wet through the helmet, and the peak goes some way to keeping the rain out of your eyes. (And the helmet stops the cap flying off in the wind). But you may look a bit of a lemon.

Gareth, thanks. Looking like a lemon is normal for me, but thanks for the tip. I have to admit I don't wear a helmet, but a waterproof cap sounds like a good idea. Here begins a new mission - the search for a non-lemon, weatherproof cycling cap!
