Time to get the Brompton serviced

It’s that time of the year when I finally remember to book the annual service. Given that I brought my bike in February this should have taken place some months ago. But I never remember and I am always too busy to take time out to do anything about it if I did. Anyway the Brompton has been fine and I haven’t had any problems. It may be time to change the break cable or blocks, but apart from that I don’t think there any surprises.

Cables are the main thing. They fracture round the bottom bracket area.

I was cleaning out part of my frame yesterday and noticed some wear on the cables on my S6L.

I took my 8 week old Brompton in for it's 6-8 week free service which took about 10 minutes. When I got it home and folded it up I had a problem. On the last stage of folding where you bring the pedal up to fold it, the chain would unravel off the chainring. So I rode it back and a while they worked out what they had done.Apparently the cones had been tightened too much during the service and needed loosening again. And then the following week my chain snapped whilst setting off from lights. So I took it back and the dealer fixed this. And also my plastic chainguard snapped. I'm hoping I've just been unlucky.

Hi Gareth

Sorry about the mishaps. I think you have been unlucky or your dealer doesn't have lot of experience with Bromptons. The only early problems I had were with the dynamo lights. When they were sorted they worked brilliantly for a year then stopped. So I got them removed because the dynamo damaged the tyre.

I have never seen a chainguard on a Brompton. Is this new?

I have had no problem with the dealer who has fixed everything under warranty but agree some of the problems shouldn't have occurred.
The chainguard I refer to is the circular piece of black plastic that is push-fitted to the front chainring to prevent your clothing catching the chain. (Maybe I am using the wrong term).I can see you have one fitted on your photo.
The Brompton chainguard is just the black plastic disk on the chain ring.

Eek, my first annual service is due in a couple of months...or so.

How much do these cost?

Oh, that bit of plastic is the chain guard?

Joseph: I can't recall how much the service was as they had to replace my rear tyre last year and also gave the Brompton a special clean.

Charmaine: Hope you come to love your Brompton as much as I love mine.
